Preparing Kids for Optician Appointments

During elementary school, my sister’s teacher scheduled a consultation with my parents. At this meeting, this caring educational professional talked with my parents about my sister’s potential eye problems. My teacher felt my sibling couldn’t see the board in the front of the classroom. My parents sat down with my sister and talked with her about seeing an eye doctor. Thankfully, my sister visited a trusting optician who knew how to successfully work with younger kids. After receiving her new pair of glasses, she began excelling in school. On this blog, I hope you will discover ways to prepare kids for successful appointments at an optician’s office. Enjoy!

Four Tips To Eliminate Dry Eyes

Blog

Having dry eyes can be extremely uncomfortable. Dry eyes can make your eyes look red and irritated, and they may even sting. Here are four tips to help you eliminate dry eyes.

1. Remove your contacts.

Keeping your contacts in while you shower or sleep may be contributing to your dry eyes. According to Opti-free, when you shower wearing contacts, the contacts retain water which can make them contract on your eye. This results in a feeling of dryness and irritation. If your eyes are feeling dry, make sure you're removing your contacts when you're supposed to.

2. Use eye drops.

Eye drops are made from a sterile saline solution. They're safe to put in your eyes, and they can provide immediate relief from dry eyes. Use eye drops as needed. If your eyes are chronically dry, administering eye drops in the morning and before you go to bed at night may help. Make sure to store your eye drops in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve them.

3. Rule out allergies.

Dry eyes may be a sign of seasonal allergies. If your eyes are irritated and itchy in addition to being dry, you may have allergies. Try taking an over-the-counter allergy medication to see if that helps your symptoms. Be careful of taking allergy medication before driving or operating machinery since some types may cause drowsiness. If you suspect that you may be allergic to a family pet, take care to wash your hands after handling the animal and try to avoid touching your eyes or face.

4. Visit your eye doctor.

If your dry eyes are persisting even after you've tried home remedies, it's time for you to pay a visit to your eye doctor. Chronic dry eyes may be a symptom of another problem, and your eye doctor will examine your eyes to determine the cause of your symptoms. Chronic dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects certain people, and your eye doctor can treat it by prescribing medicated eye drops. If this doesn't relieve your symptoms, punctal plugs are another option. According to All About Vision, these plugs are inserted into your tear ducts to assist your own natural tear retention.

Having dry eyes isn't ideal, but luckily there are remedies for this problem. Never hesitate to contact your eye doctor if you have any questions or concerns about your treatment. After all, it's always better to be safe than sorry when dealing with your vision.
